Card Through The Window
Effect
The performer asks the spectator to pick a card without him seeing the face and replace it in the pack.
The pack is then shuffled and the performer is apparently unsuccessful in locating the card.
After a few attempts, the cards are thrown against a window in a fit of rage. On looking at the window, the chosen card is seen to be sticking to it, even more surprising is the fact that the card is on the inside of the window.
Preparation
You will need two identical packs of cards and a willing helper.
Method
This trick should be performed in an area with a large window nearby and with the spectator facing away from the window.
The spectator is asked to choose a card from a pack, memorize it and without showing you, replace the card in the pack.
The pack is then shuffled and and a couple of attempts at "is this your card " tried followed by a look of disbelief when the spectator tells you that it is not their card (this is all part of the act as you don''t even need to know the card).
After a few attempts you fake an angry outburst and making sure the cards are squared up throw the pack broadside at the window, where they will hit the window and fall to the ground, except the chosen card which is sticking to the window.
Your helper was already positioned behind the window and spectator and had an identical pack of cards. He was able to see the chosen card and took the duplicate from his pack.
A small piece of looped sticky tape or magicians wax was attached to the duplicate card and it was stuck to the inside of the window.
The helper should then have walked away from the window.

Magic Man-Underground

Changes happening...
“The unnatural… That is too natural.”
- Goethe

When David Blaine reached his late teens, his aspirations spread to other areas of entertainment. Not only interested in magic and illusion, he developed a sincere passion for the dramatic arts as well. David would take several acting classes to further his education in such areas, and was eventually featured on local commercials and daytime television in minor roles.

His family life had changed as well. His mother remarried a wealthy banker, John Bukalo, who would eventually move the family to New Jersey. Here, David’s younger half-brother, Michael, was born. Due to his love for acting, David would move back to New York on his own to attend a major drama school, the Neighborhood Playhouse.

While struggling to survive in New York City, David claimed to be lightheaded and sick. His physician found nothing wrong with him after a thorough check-up. Eerily, David gave the doctor the most haunting stare he could create, and pulled two large bricks from his jacket pockets. He dropped the heavy rocks to the floor, and the doctor’s jaw dropped in bewilderment. His eyes widened in disbelief. He witnessed the most paranormal sight he ever experienced. His patient levitated several inches off the floor, until he was hovering a full foot in the air.

After seeing how his magic could affect even extremely educated men of various professions, David Blaine felt he could get somewhere with his talent. He wanted to show his skill to the world with a new, gritty flavor and intrigue. He wanted to display how his ability to create illusion could shock real audiences in spontaneous places. As an actor, he wanted to play the part of a real magician… the lone wolf, the man from afar, the mysterious stranger.

The Underground
“Nothing is too small to know, and nothing is too big to attempt.” -William Van Home

Several years later, David Blaine started to work in high-class restaurants in Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan. Here, he performed amazing magic while serving tables and waiting on regular patrons. He watched as his reputation grew and he began to earn several hundred dollars in tips each night.

The combination of tips and acclaim boosted Blaine’s confidence and he began socializing with anyone he met. Before he knew it, his raw form of magic began to attract famous personalities to the places he was employed in. His underground reputation spread like wildfire among well-known celebrities like Robert DeNiro, Sean Puffy Combs (Puff Daddy), and Leonardo DiCaprio – and they began to stop by to witness his unique performances.

Quietly dating stars like Fiona Apple, model Josie Maran and Madonna put him in every gossip column of city magazines.

On one occasion, he made a restaurant customer choose any card from a normal deck and sign his name across its face. The man then sandwiched his card between his palms as tightly as he could, as David showed a different card on top of the pack. Without any suspicious moves or obvious sleight of hand, the two cards instantly switched places. After the customer left for home, he actually waited outside in the cold until David’s night shift ended. He approached David to personally thank him for the feeling the magic had given him.

Around this time, Patrice White found out she had ovarian cancer. The woman David loved and who had inspired David to take up magic at an early age was dying. She refused to change her lifestyle in spite of the illness but would continue supporting David through his goals and dreams to become a successful entertainer. Her drive and ambition gradually stopped cancerous tumors for a long period of time, but in 1994, she died at the age of 48. Until her dying day, she donated to charity, helped the poor, and lived a life of compassion and generosity.

Her son David Blaine was devastated.

The death of his mother would leave him feeling tremendous loss and yet produce a driving will to succeed as an entertainer. Magic was always something David shared with Patrice, and would remain a spiritual way to keep in touch with her even after death. David began performing close-up magic at private parties and overseas resorts, expanding his venue. During this time, he met and became friends with other professional magicians Paul Harris, Bill Kalush, and David Williamson, who would all consult his future street magic projects.

Blaine, the early years of the Magic Man

"You don't get into magic. Magic gets into you." -David Blaine, 1998

On April 04, 1973, Patrice White gave birth to her first son, David Blaine. As a supportive single mother, she would raise him to the best of her ability, encouraging him to pursue his childhood dreams. Living on the streets of Brooklyn, New York, the two shared a close bond. The young boy would never meet his true biological father, only learning about him through stories and rumors. David's mother would be the most influential role model in his life

Four-year-old David Blaine experienced magic for the first time while waiting for a subway to arrive. Standing with his mother, he witnessed a stranger perform miracles for random passerby at the station. Eventually, the street magician let the curious little boy assist in an astonishing effect.

Threading a shoelace through a borrowed ring, the performer made young David Blaine close his little hand around them. There was no conceivable way the ring could escape the lace while he held everything tightly. The magician made a gesture over David's fist, and the boy's eyes widened with shock. Inside his own hand, he felt the ring melt through the shoelace, penetrating straight through its middle. He slowly opened his hand, one finger at a time, to discover the wedding band. off the string.

Inspired by this encounter, Blaine would strive to amaze people from that moment on. Given an old deck of Tarot Cards as a gift, he would study and practice basic sleight of hand at local libraries to become a riveting center of attention at family get-togethers and gatherings. His eccentricity and talent developed at an early age.

Old Man on the Street

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious." -Albert Einstein

Appearing rather lonely at times, Old Man Marlow would sit on his apartment stoop during the late hours of the day, and stare off into space. His blank stare never expressed a hint of emotion or kindness. He sat on the same step, always holding a lit cigarette, but he never appeared to smoke. Naturally, this strangeness would make children avoid his presence and adults ignore him. The sight of Old Man Marlow, however, sparked a curiosity in young David Blaine that he wanted to explore.

While walking home from school one day, David Blaine met the senile man upon his stoop, holding his cigarette and looking intently at the building across the street. Intrigued by Old Man Marlow's lack of emotion, David took out 52 "personal friends" in attempt to put a little magic into his mundane life. Eventually, the man's fixed stare directed itself toward a naïve boy playing with a deck of cards.

"Would you like to see a some magic?" asked David with a quiet smile on his face. Before Marlow could answer, he found himself choosing a card from the deck, the seven of spades. David took the old man's cigarette, and in plain view, pushed it straight through the card, burning a hole in the middle. The image was unforgettable; Old Man Marlow began to smile.

When the young boy pulled the cigarette out of the seven of spades however, the card visually healed itself - completely. Impossibly, the card was as good as new, and David gave it to the Old Man as a gift. When he couldn't find any flaws with the card, Marlow screamed and laughed in awe as he ran into his home with pure excitement. The imaginative Brooklyn boy succeeded in revealing a side of Old Man Marlow no one ever knew existed. This is what magic does.

Some facts about David Blaine

David Blaine Official Web Site
David Blaine's official web site, www.davidblaine.com, once provided fabulous clips of the magician performing street magic. The clips are not there at this time but the site has recently undergone a dramatic face lift, displaying pictures of the artist as well as some merchandise and general information.

David Blaine DVD's and Videos and Books
David Blaine currently has three DVD’s out on the international market and a best selling book. In the UK, Telstar produced Mystifier DVD and Showman DVD for Blaine — a compilation of his first three national television specials titled Street Magic; Magic Man; Frozen in Time. In the US, Blaine featured all three specials on a single DVD entitled Fearless.

There are currently two different versions of his best selling book, Mysterious Stranger, which leads the path to a buried treasure in the USA through codes and hidden symbols on the DVD. This contest is no longer active.

Telstar introduced Blaine to a UK audience and is responsible for creating a huge amount of recognition for Blaine (through ads created by BananaSplit's Steve Kemsley) that deliberately introduced David Blain to Britain more as a rock star idol than as a magician. Popular opinion of Blaine is divided as of late, due to a stunt Blaine pulled when he lasted 44 days on no food while suspended in a persplex box over London. It seems UK folk didn't like Blaine taking so much attention away from their daily lives as the media blitz hummed on and caused traffic jams and hogged attention on the tube. In one of the funniest stunts played on Blaine during this time, a radio controlled helicopter dangled a fat cheeseburger inches away from Blaine's glass box while Blaine looked on.

David Blaine and Women
Blaine has been rumored to date some of the hottest names in the business: Fiona Apple, Madonna, and Josie Maran to name a few.

How did Blaine get started in street magic ?
Taking a small digital video camera out into the seedy world of Times Square New York, Blaine and a friend shot footage of Blaine performing street magic for passersby with just a pack of cards and a few coins. Contrary to overwhelming belief, Blaine had never performed street magic before this time.

The results for such a simple idea were phenomenal. David Blaine’s camera caught reactions of people screaming in the street, laughing in shock, and crying in hysteria. This raw early footage would be something to look back on now in light of the fame Blaine has achieved.

Blaine took the crude footage to ABC television in New York, managed to get an appointment, and after completely wowing executives with his bland yet powerful brand of close up magic - got a $1,000,000 contract and paycheck to perform in the first ever Street Magic television special. This was in 1997... David Blaine Street Magic still airs to this day (on TLC The Learning Channel). Trick Monkey: David Blaine's deal with Robert Deniro's Tribeca Productions
Tribeca Productions, the partnership between Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, has formalized a first-look deal at MGM. Tribeca has made a deal to develop "Trick Monkey" a film based on the exploits of up-and-coming magician David Blaine, with De Niro and co-star Leonardo DiCaprio attached. It's a kind of father-son scenario. De Niro would play a magician, DiCaprio his apprentice. Jim Uhls ("Dead Reckoning") is scripting.
